Happy Valentine day to all.. I do not believe in making a day for love or day for mom and dad.. It’s the birth of the materialistic western culture, creating markets worldwide for commercial products by using the feelings of fellow humans.. (I wrote an article about this issue name as “Love Sells” in EMY too.)
I rather love and be loved by my Shahriar all day and night of the year..
So I invite you all to send your definitions of LOVE.. What is love?

Love is the most abused, misunderstood and overstated concept in the world.

Organica, Indead you’re right..

I asked the same question on my blog a year ago and got some interesting responses: http://liyapilly.wordpress.com/2007/05/02/what-is-love/
To answer the question for me, love is V

today is a money making scheme as is mothers day and fathers day.
Love is loving someone for the sake of Allah, guided by Quran and Sunnah in every trial and hardship

or as a t-shirt i saw yesterday said:
Why fall in love
when you can fall in
“chocolate”
Though i’d swap the choc for ice cream
Also another thing, love is sisterhood

LOVE is the state of a feeling one experiences as a result of becoming closely attentive to a particular person because this person changes the chemistry of his routine life either physically or spiritually. This state of love varies in intensity and in some languages ” I know Arabic language does” they have a name for each one of those many states one experiences.
For me LOVE means a state of feeling complete with my shahrazad which motivates me to provide for her happiness and wellfare in any way which pleases her. I understand that love is not expectation, it is not lust, it is a state in which you give all you can potentially give to see your loved one happy and in harmony with you.
Happy Love days to all

Love is what makes us survive even in hard times, Love is what makes our life worth-living, Love is what makes us smile when we are boiling with anger, Love is what we carve at the end of the day, Love can be the most painful thing to deal too,Love breaks our heart, Love can leave you shattered and mad, Love can either show you heaven or even hell ……….. !!!!!!!!
February 14, 2008 at 11:38 pm
Liya, Thank you for the link. I didnt know you have same question. Since now I have to consider on your archive more than before. Sure yours is “V”
Radiant Light, that T-Shirt seems funny indead. lol.. Love is Sisterhood? It seems some kind of feminist motto
Xavier, Waw, very beautiful definition. I too always try to make my beloved happy. Good news you’ve found your Shahrazad too
Maryam, Hardship? Painful? Shattered and mad? Breaker of heart? Hell?
I dont think that’s love which make all of this. Love at the end leaves us with joy and happiness. If we go to every state you mentioned, then i dont think that be love.

Love is selflessness and subordinating one’s needs and wants to those that are more important (another individual or all of humanity collectively.) Love is the rejection of self-gratification when it causes conflict.
You are right about V-Day being a commercial creation devoid of any meaning. It is only a way for retailers and corporations to fatten their pockets. They creates demand to make people believe that if they do not buy – they do not love their partner. That is evil because it manipulates emotions and creates false-emotions not based on love.
Great post, as always

Yes It is Shahrzad ,Sadly but true …………
Love doesnt always have a happy ending, and when it doesnt, it turns out something like i mentioned.
Talking everything good about love is i think bookish language, there’s no practicality in that.
I showed two faces of love, good and bad too.

johnnypeepers, Beautiful. Now i can say the Love you defined is Love of Mom to her children. Did you read my article in EMY? Read it..
Maryam, love is just a feeling or motivator. And i know that love is true to be for the sake of God. So when you love a person for the sake of God and trust in Him, you will never turn to be heartyly sad. You feel you changed to be a better person. Love helped you to be, even if on the surface, there be a broken heart out there. Like mother’s love to her children. This love is not bookish. Maybe you experianced it with your mom too. But very rare and true.

Love can only be felt…not defined.
February 15, 2008 at 2:49 am
Zios, Hmmm, That’s something

It seams that most people speak of the effect and side effects of love rather than attempting to define love..
Defining love had always been a very difficult task and till now nobody could give the proper definition of love.
Maybe love is not tangible and it is just a unique feeling that is born out of a specific relationship.. the continuation of the relationship around the same intial conditions is a must for this feeling to stay alive, or best still is to allow one’s self to adjust his or her perceptions to continuously synchronise with the actions and inductions of the beloved one..
since human nature varies consideraply between one and another so will the definition of love..
I believe it is impossible to ever find a universal definition for love.
Because of this the phrase ” I LOVE YOU” is a very strong one; when you say this to someone he or she immedietly understands it from his own experiences and hence feels good about it, evenso the one who said it has a completely different meaning for it.. Thats why many love stories end up with pains; each one understood love differently and they get diappointed when they find thier partner behaves different that his or her expectations of love and what it should do….

Love is caring for someone enough to allow them to live the life they choose and believe in.
February 15, 2008 at 1:55 pm
Despite the fact that I have been in love before, many times
but still this is one thing that I cant define at all. Thank God none of my previous girl friends ever asked me to define love or I have been screwed. I keed I keed !
February 15, 2008 at 4:35 pm
sorry i didnt clarify, when i said sisterhood I meant, how we meet sisters from all over the world, be it through the blogosphere or other mediums, and you love them even without knowing them.
Truth is there are so many kinds of love, and each person will describe it differently
February 15, 2008 at 5:57 pm
Love can’t be expressed or defined in words. It is to be felt by your heart.

Since love isnt tangible there is not real way of measuring it or recognising it. Its an entirely personal affair. But one usually knows and is aware of it when it appears/manifests itself in their life. Love for your parents, friends, partner – love for beautiful things that please you like flowers, scents, children. Just have to tune yourself to it.
February 16, 2008 at 12:35 am
Love is sharing your Wimpy Halfponder (that is a burger just in case you really didn’t know!).
February 16, 2008 at 12:56 am
What a beautiful idea!!!! I guess everyone LOVES to give a definition for LOVE
Love is the living power that is in and behind everything… But what words can really describe it?
The other thing is how often do we really feel love? To the full extend, almost physically – feeling the heart wide open and willing to embrace the whole world?…
February 16, 2008 at 1:16 am
Xavier, What you said is very interesting. I think that different understanding of “I LOVE YOU” depends to those states of love you mentioned in your previous comment. You said in arabic there is a name for every state of love. Like the matter of “Eshq(love)” is different from “hubb(like)”, so it happens a person uses “I LOVE YOU” when he is in the state of hubb. But the person who hears, understand it as “Eshq”. True?
~W~, Yes, i love kind of love, that allows every one to bloom himself and his potentials freely.
AmMaR, Are you sure you fell in “love” and not fall in “like”?;)
Radiant Light, Ah i got now. Thank you for clarification
M Anil, i think as much as we feel, we can not define.
royii, LOL
axinia, ah welcome back girl. Hmm,. Do not we feel love with the right one ever after?

Just a story:
Somebody askes Mansur Al-Hallaj:“What is love?”
He answers: “You will see it today, tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow.”
They killed him that day, burned him the next day and threw his ashes to the wind the day after that. “This is love!”
February 16, 2008 at 2:01 am
Nobody told me it was V Day. I just celebrated Singles Awareness Day
February 16, 2008 at 2:09 am
Valentine is hijacked by commercialism, you don’t have to abide by that: you should make special food for the one you love rather than buy tacky red heart chocolate, you should write a poem, rather than a pre-printed hallmark-card, Girls used to make dream-cusions for their friends: small cushions filled with herbs and dried flowers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Love, in all its forms, it what shapes and binds the world together.
Contrary to the materialist reality of the world, you grow richer in love the more you give it away.
Amor omnia vincit!
Love is a Divine gift
Coming from God to His creation.
May it shine in the heart
of every human of every nation
this day and every day
It is all we take with us
in the end
And all that God will ask of us:
“How did you spend
what I have given you?”
Alhamdulillah! May we all answer that question with a smile
Ya Haqq!
jahandost, haha.. No problem if you forgot. V day is for those who are not single anymore
Aafke, Yup, also we can send papery letter instead of Electronic mail
Darvish, Beautiful poem. From your poem, i just remember story of Eve and Adam. The first love in the world. I read something in a book about plain of Arafat, and the moment Eve and Adam reunited on the earth in the plain. That was LoVe indead which rejoint them. A divine gift they took with themselves from the heavens..
February 16, 2008 at 5:03 pm
Darvish: That is such a beautiful poem!
If I steal it, to use for my own blog, or something else, to whom do I attribute it?
February 17, 2008 at 3:39 pm
I don’t mind celebrating a day for mom or dad or love, But I mind celebrating them in the western culture way.
I mean it’s ok to bring your finance a gift in this day, no one will be hurt.
But it’s important to know that love doesn’t need a special day or a gift to grow.
cute lovely words, maybe a letter, kiss, or sms, are enough some times, especially if the money statue is broken.
love for me is to have some one care and accept me.
anyway, for me, no fiance, then no love
.
Love is the connection of souls, felt with the heart.
February 18, 2008 at 11:20 am
Alloush, Salam, welcome back
Insha’allah one day you will find your right woman too..
Zainab, Connection of the souls. Hmmm.. I agree there should be spiritual connection, and sure in true love there is kind of connection.
Loving God is True Love.
Loving men and Women is a reflection of it and hence is illusory.
But one who cannot love Father, Mother, brother and Sister can never Love God. This is feeling but not THOUGHT or speech.
Love of God alone can wipe of all the hatredness one has towards others.
but someone has already said rightly true Love or affection is a feeling and hence cannot be expressed. Some lyrics of Saints may come close to that.
