Aafke and i had a conversation around astrology in Lunar Eclipse In Iran. I felt that will be interesting to give some info about it to you.
Astrology, study of the stars, is a group of systems, traditions, and beliefs in which knowledge of the relative positions of celestial bodies and related details was being held to be useful in understanding, interpreting, and organizing information about personality, human affairs, and other terrestrial matters.
Later, astrology and astronomy began to go off in different directions; Astronomy became one of the central sciences while astrology was more and more viewed as an occult science.
There are many different kinds of astrology such as: Arab and Persian, Chinese, Indian, Hellenistic , Egyptian/Mediterranean, Western, Babylonian/Assyrian, Islamic, Jewish, Mayan, etc. Here i mention relationship between the zodiac system and Iranian/Persian calendar. Iranian Calendar
Interesting that Iranian Calendar is exactly based on this system. Mean in Iranian calendar every sign is a month. Iranian calendar is a Solar calendar began numbering years in AH 17 (638 CE), regarding the first year as the year of Muhammad(PBUH) ‘s emigration from Mecca to Medina. It’s divided to 365 days, 12 months and 4 season. In the way that every season contains 3 months.
The calendar became rearranged by Omar Khayyám , well-known poet and Astronomer. More accurate than the Gregorian Calendar , Iranian Calendar is included the most accurate computation of the solar year.
Iranian new year is started in first day of Spring-March 21st. Every four years, one day will be added to last month -Esfand- and it changes from 29 to 30 days, so that the calendar will remain accurate.

It’s funny how horoscopes are always so vague as to make you believe it in…because of every number of traits there are bound to be some that relate to you.
I used to read it alot when I was younger but not anymore — but some people can be very weird about it…they HAVE to read it to know how their day will be…

Silent Soul, I mentioned those habits for fun. But generally Astrology as i mentioned is part of classic sciences, still nothing could rejected the effective movement of other planets and forces of stars to the Earth.
It has been remained as mysterious as the rest of Ulum El Qribah or occult Sciences.
In modern era there are physicists who are still working on it.

I’m a firgo! I analyse everything
I don’t like daily horoscopes since I believe Allah knows the unseen.
I do read the personality definitions of each sign which is cool and fun like you said shah

I’m Mehr – how interesting this was, thank you for sharing!
February 25, 2008 at 6:12 am
Salam
This is very interesting. Although am Iranian I could never memorize the month names and the only thing relating me to the calender was the Nawrooz celebrations. Until I read your post I wasn’t sure of what is it based on, we’re on year 1386 or something right? So is the difference between the Hijri calender and the Persian one being due to the way they’re counted (I can never understand those calender calculations), is it possible to have this much variation between them!??
Also if its based on the prohpet’s (peace be upon him) emigration, how come Nawrooz was celebrated in the Achaemenids era as well?
Thanks for the information by the way

Unique, Virgo. What’s your birthmonth in Iranian calendar?
seekingnoor, Welcome.
February 25, 2008 at 10:04 am
Ali, Even if beginning of calendars in both Hijri and Irani are based on Prophet’s Emigration, but Hijri calendar is a lunar caledar and Iranian one is a solar calendar. The difference between them come from this point.
Iranians had always their esp calendar. But later after getting muslim, they changed the beginning of the calendar based on Hijri for their interest toward the Prophet.
Celebrating spring is not something just for Iranians. Egyptians also celebrate it and they call it Sham El Naseem. Also it’s celebrated in Northern Iraq, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Albania, Georgia, Syria, Lebanon, Pakistan, India, Northwestern China, the Caucasus, the Crimea, and the Balkans.
The Seasons always used to play a vital role for people of the past. After a severe winter, the beginning of spring was a great occasion for them. So that they used to celebrate it and this celebration was before Achaemenids. Later they entered it in Zoroastrian religion.
Welcome

Salaam,
..I am totally not happy with this……lol

TheAngryMuslimah, why you’re not happy with this? Your sign is very beautiful. You were born on Esfand
February 25, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Shahrzad, thank you for this – other zodiacal perspectives give us a full view…a big picture. You’ve published the post with profound timing too.
I love how humankind’s search for relevance is mirrored across the world – in all cultures throughout all time. Makes our lives feel a bit like a family soup – we’re all in it together, different tastes & views, but the result is beautiful.
If I may contribute to your knowledge base: Zodiac Signs & Meanings and another cultural perspective from the Celts: Celtic Zodiac: Astrological Trees of the Druids
Thank you again.
High regard,

I’m born in Shahrivar!
I don’t believe in Astrology at all! I find it really unpleasant to contemplate that your personality is subject to when you happen to be born. And saying that I must admit that the Chinese sign of Sheep or goat, which I am, is usually spot on!
Just wait when it gets 08-08-2008, all the chinese will try everything to get their baby born at thist time, preferably at 08.00 o’ clock!
We in Europe celebrate Spring too! Only it’s been highjacked by the Catholic church and called easter. It’s really Ostara.
Rooster and sheep will do well.
Quarrels will have to be resolved in a subtile manner. As business partners they should be properous!
February 25, 2008 at 5:41 pm
My sister’s birthday is also on May 1st
That must be why you are like part of the family
And here is a link to an old poem called Believe Not in Astrologers
http://darvish.wordpress.com/2006/06/14/believe-not-in-astrologers/
Ya Haqq!
February 25, 2008 at 5:43 pm
avenefica, Thank you for your comment. I really mentioned those signs to explain Iranian calendar for readers. Thank you for the links BTW.
Aafke, LOL, i like Shahrivari people.
Astrology is a science. Even if i can not get hw starts can effect personalities, but you can see how they used it to make an accurate calendar. If i wanted to explain more, it would be very complicated.
What you said about chinese is hilarious. hehe
I wrote an article on Easter before. Both Christmas and Easter(Ostara) were parts of Mithraism, practising before raising Christianity in the Europe.
Hey it seems we have good harmony. What do you think about a bussiness together, eh?
February 25, 2008 at 5:46 pm
darvish, thank you brother Irving. So she was also born on International Laborer day
lol, Believe not in Astrologers. I liked your poem.
February 25, 2008 at 7:13 pm
I had no idea the Iranian calendar was based on the lunar cycle. It makes sense, though.
February 25, 2008 at 7:21 pm
pistolpete, Thank you for your comment. Islamic/Hijri calendar is totally a lunar calendar. But Iranian calendar is solar calendar. They have almost 100 years difference. Now we’re on year 1386 in Iranian calendar.
February 25, 2008 at 9:23 pm
As Salaamu ALaikum SIs:
Yeah, I used to read them alot when I was younger and was so weird about them. Of course now, my beleifs are more realistic.
Intersting post
February 25, 2008 at 9:49 pm
I was born in Esfand. Is that good or bad?
February 26, 2008 at 12:18 am
ummabdurrahman, Thank you
Nowadays some muslim women really go after kind of things and listen to every strange woman who claim to know prediction. That’s weird. Good you’re realistic.
Achelois, I personaly love Esfand. That’s the month of blooming. Most trees start to wake up after a cold winter and weather is fresh and nice. Spirit of Bahar (spring) is reviving
Is that good or bad now?
February 26, 2008 at 1:40 am
Scorpio/Aban. :p
February 26, 2008 at 2:47 am
I’m not kidding, Shaharzad, about the Chinese, you just wait! The number 8 is increadibly important in China, I bet thousands of chinese have been very busy, last December!
February 26, 2008 at 5:47 am
i think horoscopes reading is something that one reads and the nxt moment forgets.
ultimately, how we want our life to be depends on ourselves and not a few lines of words that is written by people that we dont even know.
lol.
February 26, 2008 at 8:26 am
Cool, I don’t believe in the astrology stuff. Someone rightly pointed out that the so called ‘predictions’ are so vague that anything can be true. The Iranian new year is nice. I have seem many Iranians here celebrate it. Unfortunately where I currently am there is often the whole bidaa debate that the Saudis throw around. No wonder they don’t come to Korean new year celebrations! lol
February 26, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Mordad/Lion
(****proud look at my face, thinking inside: yeah, I know I am good****)
February 26, 2008 at 8:53 pm
ehm ehm, Scorpio kicks butts lol
February 26, 2008 at 9:31 pm
I think there is some basis for astrology… some scientific but unfortunately today its mired with shirk and the like.

Sumera, secretive.
Thank you for the link. That’s useful :0)
Aafke, i know you’re right. I heard same story about 06/06/2006. But with this fact that they didnt want to deliver their baby in that time. They think thats time of satan. Anyway i heard the same in some other countries too.
zixuan369, Thank you for your comment. the main reason for writing about astrology here, was discussing Iranian calendar.
Amina Ae Sook, HAHA, you’re cute.
Are you really korean? There was a Korean serial here in Iranian TV, “the jewel in the palace” or something like this.
Lalla mona, Thank you for your comment.
Haleem, Shirk? hmmm…
February 27, 2008 at 1:54 am
666 is mentioned in the bible somewhere as ” the number of the beast” especially the Americans are fobic about it.
The georgian calender isn’t accurate anyway, and Jesus wasn’t born on year zero 25 december anyway. That date was apparently chosen to coincide with the birthday of Mithras.
I love the way we can celebrate New Year several times over, spread out over a few months, if we keep open minded!
The Saudi’s are spoilsports: anything slightly fun is haram. They are just like some early christian sects!
In my city the Chinese population hold a really big party with food and Chinese Artists, and everybody is invited!
February 27, 2008 at 2:13 am
Im a gemeni……..nd i think some of the things they say about gemenis is true
“The Twins) (May 22nd to June 23rd) (air, mutable, personal): Keyword: “I think”. Logical, inquisitive, lively, active, curious, multi-tasking, talkative, sociable, duality, mercurial, whimsical. Can be superficial, two-faced, inconstant, restless, impulsive, headstong, stubbborn.”
Except the part about being two faced. I dont think im like that! The rest of it is pretty accurate :p
Interesting you should bring this up sharzad cuz the movement of the stars does have an effect on humans lives, i remeber reading in Ghazali’s Book of Knowledge that the movement of the planets and stars does impact our lives but having knowledge of that is useless and futile. The only knowledge that is beneficial is knowledge of the hereafter and God. He goes on to slate all other types of knowledge quite vehemently as pointless. He even argues with fiqhi’s (the jurisprudents) that knowledge of the laws of islam and the nuts and bolts of islam is not as important as Knowledge of the Hereafter and how to attain the pleasure of God.
February 27, 2008 at 2:23 am
I did’nt put that quite accurately! Not only is having knowledge of the stars and planets and how they impact on our lives is useless and futile, it is blameworthy! He ghazali says it should not be learned and this knowledge is futile. The only knowledge, worthy and useful is knowledge of the hereafter and God and the ways of God. Thats what he (Ghazali) says.
Really good book for those wanting to find out the different types of knowledge, different branches of knowledge and what is the most worthy and important class/branch of knowledge!

Yes, The Iranian Calendar is based on Zodiac signs and this is quite interesting. The Iranian calendar is an astronomical solar calendar and one of the longest chronological records in history.
