My “Haft Sin” Table

(My Haft Sin Table – Click to see the Larger foto.)

Haft Sin or the seven ‘S’s is a most important tradition of Nowruz, Iranian new year. The haft sin table includes seven items which should be starting with the letter S or Sin (س in Farsi alphabet). The items symbolically mark to seven creations and holy immortal protecting them.

Originally called Haft Chin, the Haft Sin has evolved over time, but has kept its symbolism. Iranians try to set as beautiful Haft Sîn table as they can, as it is not only of traditional and spiritual value, but also noticed by visitors during Nowruzi visitations and is a reflection of their good taste.

This year my Haft Sin had more than seven “S”. Just bcs i could not choose among too many “S”s i had.

The main items are:

1. Sabzeh – wheat, barley or lentil sprouts growing in a dish – symbolizing rebirth
2. Samanu – a sweet pudding made from wheat germ – symbolizing affluence
3. Senjed – the dried fruit of the oleaster tree – symbolizing love
4. Sir – garlic – symbolizing medicine
5. Sib – apples – symbolizing beauty and health
6. Somaq – sumac berries – symbolizing (the color of) sunrise
7. Serkeh – vinegar – symbolizing age and patience

I didn’t have a missing “S”. But i would like to add these below items too. Just for making my table more beautiful:

* Sonbol - the fragrant hyacinth flower (the coming of spring)
* Sekkeh – coins (prosperity and wealth)

Other items in my table:

*The Quran
*Lit candles (enlightenment and happiness)
*A mirror
*Decorated eggs, sometimes one for each member of the family (fertility)
*A bowl with goldfish (life, and the sign of Pisces which the sun is leaving)
*A bowl of water with an orange in it (the earth floating in space)

How does my table look like?

    Dear Shahrzad
Happy Nowruz and thanks for you kind words.
This is a great haft sin table :)

  4. Organic Muslimah Says:

LOL. It sounds there are a lot unIslamic roots to the celebrating and adding the Quran is a modification that occurred after Islam spread, right?

  5. Shahrzad Says:

Organica, Nowruz is not something “religious” at all. So we can not sort it as unislamic or islamic. It was an “innocent”(Mubah or without harm) Iranian celebration for coming spring and comes from 3000 years ago as start of the year. There is same in Egypt as Sham Al Naseem which comes from 5000 years ago.
Iranians added Quran for they become muslim. They read Quran in the new year, for blessing. Iranian christians put gospel, Iranian jews put Torah and Iranian zoroastrians put Avesta.
Islam recognises social norms as long as they are not a kind of worshiping idols or shirk.. :)

  6. Shahrzad Says:

    Homeyra, Thank you. :)

  7. Sumera Says:

Lovely table spread :) Can i come to yours fr Nouroz next yr?:p

  8. Shahrzad Says:

    ُSumera, LOL, Of course. You’re invited. :P

  9. Karin Says:

Your table looks absolutely LOVELY!!! Having been to Iran (pretty much all over) in summer 1974, I obviously missed “NOWRUZ” … as it turns out, that was MOST unfortunate as it appears to be an absolutely joyful event!
I wish I could join you and we could celebrate together … !! :-)

Did you see that I tagged you? Look at my blog …

  10. Karin Says:

    You’re SICK? Have the “sniffles”?
    FEEL BETTER dear friend!!!!!!

  11. Shahrzad Says:

Karin, Thank you :P I saw the tag and i will go for it Insha’allah soon. Thank you again for inviting me.
Yes i am very badly sick. And i even can’t talk. The only voice comes out my throat is as somebody is whistling!! :(

  12. Karin Says:

Take all the time you need!! Drink HOT fluids, NOT with lemon the way it is commonly known! Lemonjuice like every other “fruit-acid” makes matters worse as it causes even more mucus to form and … what’s the “food” of those viruses and bacterias? Mucus …

It was an Ajurvedic who taught me that in Kathmandu in 1981 … he did safe my life with his trteatment!

    HUGS!!

  13. Shahrzad Says:

Karin, Thank you so much for your advice. I can say i’ve been drinking lemon juice all the time. It didnt treat my illness, but it made it worse :?

  14. Iranian Ajax Says:

I really like your blog Shahrzad.

I wish I had a picture of my 7S for you to see.

    Hope you are well.

  15. Karin Says:

    I believe that in a jiffy …
What’s the best in my opinion is simply hot tea – and SLEEP! In German we say that a flu WITH treatment takes a week – and WITHOUT, seven days! ;-) FEEL BETTER!!!

    Hugs!

  16. ~W~ Says:

Happy Nowruz Shahi. What a lovely table you’ve made. I like the meaning behind every item :) and get well soon!

  17. Maryam Says:

Your table looks quite heavy to me …. ;-) But, your post is very colurful, just the way i hope your life shall be inshallah, Ameen

  18. Shahrzad Says:

Iranian Ajax, Welcome to my blog. Thank you. :)

Karin, Waw, Hot tea is good idea. If you know i am almost addicted to tea. I try to sleep more too insha’allah. Thank you for all your kindness. You’re a gem really ;)

~W~, thank you, thank you. I feel better now alhamdulilah. :P

Maryam, LOL @ Heavy.. I adore colors and colorful life. I think colors are God’s miracles in a way. Aren’t they? Ameen for your Du’a.. :)

  19. Aafke Says:

Hoe does your table look? It looks GREAT!!!
    Beautiful!!!
    Happy Nowruz (again!)

I drink tea with honey when I’m ill, even though I do not like honey, I feel it helps.
Old Dutch remedie: sleep with a cut onion on a dish next to your bed. Have tried it twice and I have the feeling that really helped. (and I don’t like onion-smell either)

Shahrzad: you are getting over your flu now: you are getting better. So that’s how your new year is going to be: better all the time!
    Love and peace

  20. Aafke Says:

( That’s what we call ”fishing” in the Netherlands, if not enough people comment in awe on your table, just ask ‘innocently’ ”how does it look?”
So you’ll get your admiring comments after all!!! }:) )

  21. darvish Says:

A beautiful table, dearest Sister :) We also had a lovely in khaniqah last night, and a zikr and music too :) Many darvishes brought their children and family so a big dinner was served afterwards for sixty people with wonderful Iranian food :)

    Happy New Year :) )

Here is the Nimatullahi Website in Farsi, and a page of Sufi music and zikr. Songs four and five are zikr.

    Ya Haqq!

  22. Bubbles Says:

Looks absolutely delectable! You must have put in a lot of effort. I love the concept. I read somewhere about the symbolic importance of the number seven in Greek and Mid Eastern culture and Arabic literature.

    Happy Nowroz! :)

  23. Barbara Simpson-L. Says:

    Shahrzaad,

Your table is absolutely LOVELY! The additional “S’s” show how you go out of your way to share with others. Thank you for sharing such beautiful generosity.

  24. Achelois Says:

    Dear Shahee, Happy Nawrooz!

    Get better soon.

That is one beautiful table! And the symbolism behind every item is even more breathtaking! Please, you must let me visit you next year Inshallah if we are alive! I am totally mersmerised.

  25. Shahrzad Says:

Aafke, LOL, thank you for your advices. Didn’t you know i am a good fisherwoman? :D

Darvish, Thank you so much for the link. It was a great Eid gift. Happy nowruz to you and yours too. :)

Bubbles, Yes nimber Seven is very important. Even in Quran, there are many things that repeated seven times. It’s also part of Quranic literary miracle. Happy Nowruz to you too. :P

Barbara, Thank you so much for your compliment. You’re kind to me always. :)

Achelois, I’m feeling better now. Karin and Aafke’s advices worked very well. (hot tea)
We have a saying in persian that says:”Guests are owner of Host’s house.” You’re always very welcome. That’s your house. :)

  26. Marahm Says:

Your table is a delight to eye and spirit. Yes, colors are one of God’s miracles that are easy to overlook when giving thanks for our blessings.

Certain animals see more colors than humans, can you imagine that? Can you imagine that more colors exist than the myriad hues, shades and tones that we perceive?

I am not envious of the animals who see more colors than we see. They were given some blessings that we were not given, masha Allah.

  27. Baikong Mamid Says:

Very nice table with colorful items with it! What does mirror symbolises? :-)

  28. 'liya Says:

I really like the grass in the dish, is that called wheatgrass or just wheat or grass? I think it’s so pretty to have in the home all the time just as natural decoration as opposed to always flowers and plants.

Hope you had a great day :D

  29. Passing_By Says:

Basket of painted eggs represented fertility/birth, a mirror reflected each visitor’s purity of heart; candles stood for enlightenment; and books signified faith or wisdom. A goldfish swam in a glass bowl, symbolizing life and the end of the astral year.

  30. Ali Says:

    Salam,

    Nawrooz-shema mobarak :D
I know am late but better late then never, very nice haf seen table by the way!

  31. Shahrzad Says:

Marahm, Thank you so much for your compliment. :)
“Certain animals see more colors than humans.”
I read some articles about it before. Anyway humans have the power to choose, and animals dont have. I still prefer to be human. ;)

Baikong, Thank you. Passing_By explained it very well:”a mirror reflected each visitor’s purity of heart” :P

‘liya, Haha, i dont know grass or wheat or wheatgrass. You’re english teacher BTW. :D

Passing_By, Thank you for your fruitful comment. :)

Ali, Nowruz-e shoma ham mobarak. 100 sal be in sal ha. :)
Thank you. No problem to be late. For finally you said your congrats :D
