Iran’s 3rd Int’l Islamic Fashion Show

The 3rd Festival of “Women of My Land” has been held on June, 12-25, 2008, focusing on tribal wedding dress and costumes for young adults.
The first journal of Islamic dress code in 100 colorful pages will be printed and offered during the festival.

Visitors from about 25 countries will also attend this year’s festival, where Iranian provinces of Gilan, Sistan-Baluchestan, Kordestan, and Ilam will have a special active presence. Source

These fotos are the Fashion show of Islamic dress code that has been held yesterday, along with the festival at Hijab Hall of the Institute for Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults.

I have no comment on this show actually. Some are So odd. Colors are not fitted with the pants or scarf or shoes and the makeup is just disaster. Some of them may be good. But generally nothing especial for me!

Your blog is really multi dimensional and so much full of diversity – and it’s all regarding Iran! A very pleasant read. I will be back. These shows that even within the confines of an Islamic republic women can and still make a difference.

  3. Aafke Says:

I really like the idea, but the dresses here are so horrible!
They look as if somebody found a discarded warehouse full of frumpy Eastern European clothes and fabrics from the sixties and everybody put three outfits on haphazardly!

I only like the pale green dress to the left of the last photo. Sort of…

Fom the links I did like the third one in the first link, that had a nice sort of vintage, eighties, japanese couture feeling, with a persian detail.

The women photographers looked a lot better dressed than the models.
    Seems a missed opportunity.

  4. Shahrzad Says:

Manal, Thank you. I try to have some posts on Iranian dress at general.

Mezba, Welcome. Thank you for your comment. I was waiting for you here. :) It’s nice idea. But i think they have this space to do it better.

Aafke, AGREE.. I too thought it’s alittle like Eastern European clothes. Like the designer had an eye on them.
I have nothing with fashion, but i would really do it better.

I wondered who wear them really? Iranian women wear alot alot better and much more fashionable than that in the street. I intended put that photojournalists foto right there to see the formal clothes for working.
They spent much money on this. Anyway the traditional part was very much better. Traditional dress doesnt need to be designed horribly like that! :(

  5. Maryam Says:

I dint quite get the Idea of what do Irani Women usually wear, as in daily wear ?
Is it pants as In western countried ?? Looked the same to me, Is it ?

  6. Marahm Says:

The concept of fashion, paired with Islamic dress code, seems like an oxymoron.

There’s nothing wrong with attractive clothing, but the whole point of “Islamic dress” is to downplay the beauty of women. Women who live in countries that require observance of the dress code are trying to “have their cake and eat it,” i.e., remain in comliance yet wear eye-catching styles and colors.

The degree to which these women achieve that goal is another matter.

In any event, the photos were interesting, as always. Now, what do Iranian women really wear?

  7. عمار - aMmAr Says:

    Mashallah! :)

How come Iranian men dont do any fashion :P ??

  8. Zios Says:

    Interesting…specially the photo journalists :-)

  9. nousha.com Says:

mmm, yes I would love to see Iranian men doing fashion too:-)

  10. Shahrzad Says:

Maryam, Iranian women wear a kind of topcoat which is at least up to knees and we call it Manteou. And it’s alittle like the coat they wear in the west in winter, but with thin fabrics actually. And pants is western pants, yes. The style of scarf or shawl is not very esp, differs. Actually it doesnt have anything with iranian traditional clothes.
If you have a flickr account i put one of them there for some girls. ;)

Marahm, I agree with you. But i also think Islamic dress has many spaces to be fashionable, even if it doesnt need to be disaseter and (more noticable!!) like this. What iranian women wear is very much more normal and islamic than this. You can see in my flickr album what we wear and compare with this. :)

aMmAr, LOL, no really. Iranian men wear like westerners.

Zios, Yes, i think those fotojournalists are more fashionable! Kind of classy women are photojournalists. ;)

Nousha, They do it for private fashion shows in Iran by some designers. Kinda fashions are included both men and women. They’re usually very technical and artistic fashion shows. And are not publically advertised. :)

  11. Amir Says:

You blog is very diverse, from recipes, to fashion shows, to politics. Very interesting. Something I “noticed” ;) is that all the models’ facial expressions are like they have absolutely no wish to be there!

  12. Aafke Says:

Duuhh, have you looked at what they had to wear?

  13. Donald Says:

No one is smiling. I think those woman are unhappy that Islamic men have to force women to dress this way because their Faith is a sham and the men can’t control their own lusts. Therefore the woman of that culture have to suffer.

  14. Achelois Says:

I love Iranian women. They always look so classy – slim and petite.

  15. Achelois Says:

Yes, but the clothes are like – ugh!

  16. Shahrzad Says:

Amir, Thank you. As i know, generally in fashion shows they’re not allowed to show facial expressions. One can not get if they like or no! lol

Aafke, LOL, There are not so many international fashion shows in Iran. So i assume they’re heartyly happy to be photographed. :D
But i liked they’d at least iron those clothes. I think they waited so much untill start of program and they seem alittle tired.

Achelois, I am not a petite and slim Iranian girl! So you dont love me anymore? :D

  17. Najeeba Says:

Wow! I liked some of those dresses. I am a fan of Iranian dresses, I have been searching for that topcoat since I came to dubai, but without much success. :( I liked the cream one in your foto, and some black ones too.
    Thanks for the snaps.

Yasetti, Thank you so much for that wonderful link. It reall helps me to complete my Art page. :)

Nadia, Welcome. That green dress seems like a kind of traditional clothes.

Sumera, They could do it better. Anyway i still think it’s much better than previous 1st and 2nd fashion shows. You can imagine how they were! :?

  23. unduk Says:

Nice article. Giving me idea how beauty clothes in iran are. Thank to present us with so many picture.

  24. Joey Zsa Zsa Says:

Donald, you’re a typical stupid white man. Muslim woman don’t cover themselves because of men or their lust, they do so because it is a commandment of God.
Nothing you perverts and degenerates in the West could ever understand I’m sure. I find the concept of an “Islamic fashion show” silly and a copy cat of the rubbish they do in the West.

  25. Achelois Says:

You are slim and very beautiful my Shahee!

  26. johnnypeepers Says:

I noticed most of the women’s faces were very stern and stoic even. Many of them looked like they were being inconvenienced having to be at the fashion show. To me it is a welcome distinction from the heroin-chic, Stockholm syndrome, doped false smile, sex slaves of the Western fashion cat walk. Are these women models in the same sense of the famous women in Europe and America, or are they average women trying on clothes for a day?

  27. Barbara Says:

Interesting. Are there famous Islamic fashion designers there? To tell you the truth, the fashions shows I’ve seen in the West for new seasons (just another pitch to sell new ‘fashionable’ clothes) are REALLY far out there in relation to the practicality of the reality most women live and move in. I like the Islamic every day and evening wear the Iranian women wear in the west. To me it is elegant, comfortable, practical and modest.

  34. Brooke AKA Ummbadier Says:

Ah Joey ZZ–Now there’s a blog I’ld love to read!

  35. Stella Says:

Paintings from ancient Persia showed so many graceful, beautiful clothes. Layers included salwar or pants, a long dress, and long sleeveless vests or coats with sahes of rich materials. The women were depicted as modest but elegant. By comparison, these outfits are quite horrible – baggy, drab, or with ghastly prints – no wonder the models look so depressed. Iran has become so colorless and unhappy – where is the joy and beauty? Wish you could return to yesteryear fro some grat fashions. In the seventies when I visited the region, the women of teheran were praised as the most elegant and beautiful of all, from Turkey to India. Now it looks so sad.
