Cooks in Iran have tried to assemble the world’s largest ostrich sandwich at a food festival in Tehran, as part of a bid to promote healthy eating. About 1,500 cooks used 1,000kg of ostrich meat to make the 1,500m long sandwich, beating the record of Italians which is 1378m.
Iran has great situation to produce ostrich and The long-term goal was to create a new cultural appetite for ostrich, which is lower in fat and cholesterol than other meats traditionally popular in Iran.

Wow!
October 20, 2008 at 9:23 pm
At first, I thought they were operating on something!
Pakistan is also working a lot towards making ostrich farming a big industry…if we all eat healthy, we might still be blogging in 100 years.
October 20, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Oooh… Ostrich sounds yummy! Thinking about their shape, there seems to be a lot of meat available on the body. For some reason, I imagine it’d taste like turkey, which in my limited experience only significantly differs to chicken in its texture, rather than taste.
My dad loves chicken necks in a curry… he’d have a field day with ostrich! hehe

Ordinary Girl, Oh Yes, Ostrich is halal meat.
misspecs, lol, in countries like Iran and Pakistan which red meat is used so much, ostrich is the best. Long live blogging!
iMuslim, I read somewhere that ostrich doesnt have any esp taste, more likely the taste of red meat. And is more similar to veal.
lol, I think ostrich neck is so huge! In farsi/persian we call it Shotor Morgh, means a chicken as huge as camel. (Shotor = camel, morgh = chicken).
Ostrich neck is Camel neck then!

I love tasting new stuff and would LOVE to eat an ostrich! Too bad we don’t get much choice in halal meat here, even getting a halal turkey for Thanksgiving is not easy!

Mezba, “would LOVE to eat an ostrich!”
You know, an ostrich is as big as a camel!
I like the taste of turkey..

Achelois, Your comment went to akismat. I took it out by own!
October 21, 2008 at 3:04 am
I saw ostrichs at the zoo when I went two weeks ago, now I can’t even think of eating them lol!
October 21, 2008 at 5:17 am
I’ll try anything once. Let me eat it first, then tell after I have a nice sample of it. This way, no preconcieved notion that I’ll like it or not.
October 21, 2008 at 5:18 am
Plu,s 1 ostrich egg = 24 servings regular eggs.
October 21, 2008 at 6:19 am
PLZ stopping Killing Animals And birds to eat them.. Please convert to vegetarianism.. How would you feel if some animal ate you or your child ??
October 21, 2008 at 9:10 am
Probably tastes like turkey
October 21, 2008 at 12:36 pm
‘liya, LOL, yes ostrich is so ugly.
CC farber, yup, that’s logical. They mixed some chicken, onion and mashroom plus spice to the sandwich. You try this way..
*1 ostrich egg = 24 servings regular eggs* LOL, so an ostrich fried egg can serve 24 people. How economical!
PETA, ah i wonder why you even eat vegatables? They’re not existance? You kill them and eat them alive, do you like somebody does same with you children? You, murderer..
Sumera, hmmm, not exactly. They say it has taste of red meat, mostly veal!

Salaam…
I saw this on the news yesterday, wow!
Ostrich meat is sold a lot here in Saudi – we have bought steaks and liver and I think if you weren’t told you were eating ostrich you’d think you were eating beef/veal. It is very deep in colour just like other red meats and very meaty. Nothing like turkey at all.
October 21, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Salam,
Thanks for the wonderful update. Last month I was reading some news about Australians trying to breed Kangaroos for red meat, as there excrete produces less carbon gases(!) and the meat itself is healthier in many ways.
I had two questions regarding that idea:
1. How can we eat such a cute looking animal?
2. Would it be Halal to eat kangaroo?
What is your opinion about it?
And, how come ostrich is halal, I know it lives on organic feed, lay eggs and all that, still it can be used for riding? I believe I have seen people riding ostrich on TV somewhere..?
W’salam.

Umm Ibrahim, You encourage me to try it. For example persian Kebab with ostrich. I want to see how will be the taste!
Tauqeer, Actually Rabbit is not halal and i think Kangaroo has same rule as Rabbit and is not halal.
Ostrich is a bird. And do people usually ride birds too?! Riding chicken for example.. lol
October 21, 2008 at 11:04 pm
Salaam,
I’m sure your ostrich kebab would taste just like any other traditional Persian kebab!
Um… why would rabbit not be halal?? I have sen them for sale here in Saudi numerous times…
October 22, 2008 at 12:50 am
I haven’t had ostrich, but I’ve also heard it doesn’t have much taste. I’m sure it would be good with the right spices!
October 22, 2008 at 9:58 am
Salaams,
Still new here, but I seen this on the news the other day. Like others up there I thought they were operating when the camera was panning and all you could see was the backs of bunch of men and women in scrubs crowded around this long table. Then they zoomed in and lo and behold! there was this huge sandwich, in all it’s ostrichy glory.
Kudus for beating the record
Oh, and I’d definitely try it. They sell it in Syria, and although I haven’t had the opportunity to try it myself, I’ve heard that in addition to being very healthy, it’s delicious if spiced and cooked right.
Enjoy!

October 23, 2008 at 10:23 am

have a look here:
http://www.ehow.com/how_2087092_ride-ostrich.html?ref=fuel&utm_source=yahoo&utm_medium=ssp&utm_campaign=yssp_art
and yes, probably rabbits and kangaroos are not Halal to eat as they use their hands to pick food, same as the case with parrots.
October 23, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Rabbit is halal but parrot is makruh
October 23, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Rabbit is haram in Shi’a school of thought. But in all Sunni schools of thought is halal.
For example Fox meat is halal in Maliki and Shafi’i school of thoughts, but in Shi’a, Hanbali and Hanafi is haram..
Actually there are many debates and differences about Halal and Haram animals in different Islamic schools..

That sounds sooo disgusting! lol. I don’t think Iranians will take particularly well to incorporating ostrich into their cultural cuisine. That’s just my opinion! I wonder if ostrich tastes like chicken.
October 25, 2008 at 1:04 am
I thought it would be more like turkey…let it come…thats how our cuisine evolve…Ostrich Biryani, Ostrich Qorma, Ostrich Kebab. ..I like and can eat everything Halal…:-)
In urdu too Ostrich = Shotar Murgh…
guess I like ostrich meat but why does it make sounds ” meowwww”
