AP: A court in Iran has sentenced a man who blinded a woman with acid also to be blinded with acid under the country’s Islamic law.
Thursday’s reports in several newspapers, including the Kargozaran, say 27-year-old Majid confessed to attacking Ameneh Bahrami in 2004 to dissuade anyone from marrying the woman he loved.
Wednesday’s ruling was issued based on the Islamic law system of “qisas,” or eye for an eye retribution.
The reports say Ameneh asked the court to sentence Majid, who was only identified by his first name, to be blinded by acid to prevent similar attacks on other women.
Majid is allowed to appeal the verdict. Source
Here’s foto of Ameneh Bahrami, this innocent girl. Before and after Acid attack. I feel so sad for her. But she is a heroine for She really fought for her right. As i read, the attacker guy in the court was so rude and completely happy and calm for his crime. He could not expect to be issued as severe.
Acid attack is a big issue in the Middle East. I still dont know what happened to another girl that i had written an article about her HERE. However It’s the first time that they really do something serious in the case of Acid Attack.
What do you think about punishment for such cases that a girl will lose her entire life forever? Is this punishment enough? Or cruel?
Can severe punishments stop these cruel men before causing any harm for girls?
Let’s discuss..

OH, my God! That photo caused my stomach to squeeze itself into my heart! The injustice and cruelty done to Ameneh can never be vindicated, not even by throwing acid on the face of the criminal.
However, the punishment is just and prescribed.
Will it stop other attacks? I doubt it, because these attackers always believe they will not get caught.

Marahm, that foto is so tragic. Esp when you see how beautiful she was. That’s why i couldn’t put it directly in my blog..

Give the attacker not just the same acid he used … give him an acid with a lower pH level, i.e. a worse acid to dowse his face with. I am all for ahimsa — peaceful living — but I also believe in justice. To make things even more right, the lady’s family should dowse him with it to avenge her.

A part of me feels somewhat horrified by the idea of the punishment, because the crime itself was so horrific. The melting and fizzling of human flesh. It’s too sick to imagine.
Who would feel happy to administer the acid? Perhaps the family, but would they have the stomach for it? Can you imagine his screams?
Also, my understanding of qisas is that the punishment cannot exceed the harm caused by the criminal. So, if someone lost a finger, then only the same finger could be removed from the perpetrator, and not the whole hand. With acid being a liquid chemical, that can easily spread, and can be corrosive to differing amount on different tissues, how would they ensure that it did not cause more harm to the criminal than was caused to the victim? If it did, would that then make the ones seeking justice, sinful?
Qur’an, Al-Baqara
My understanding of the part: “that ye may restrain yourselves” is that qisas – as regulated by the proper authorities – was ordained in order to prevent a snowball effect of revenge killings. For example, I kill you, so your brother kills me and my family, so my tribe attacks your tribe, which then leads to the development of longstanding blood feuds, and who knows what else?
On the other hand, another part of me strongly believes that the crime fits the punishment. I do think it would serve as a deterrent – as long as there is a good track record of such criminals being caught and/or turned in. Otherwise, it’s all for show; almost circus-like in an extremely grotesque way.
Allah does prefer mercy and compensation, over qisas; but He also allowed it for a reason. The final decision is with the victim who was wronged; but I do hope that people’s zeal for justice does not turn into a lust for revenge, which can lead to greater wrongs being committed, Allah forbid.

I read about a story like this, but I’m not sure if it was this case or a different one entirely that I read.
In the story that I read the article stated that the man wouldn’t have the acid just poured over his face, they’d basically just drop it into his eyes and nowhere else. (Maybe that sort of half answers some of your questions imuslim about preventing worse damage than the woman got)
Regardless of how they do this, I’m not entirely sure of how I feel about these sorts of punishments. I’ve never particularly agreed with that kind of justice. The quote by Ghandi about “an eye for an eye and soon the whole world is blind” seems particularly applicable here. It seems like it puts us on a level even lower than that of animals. But than again, maybe if something like this had happened to me I’d feel differently.

This breaks my heart. May God give her justice in this life and the next.

May Allah give sister Ameneh justice, happiness and love in this life and next. Ameen
Though she never be beautiful again but I am sure Allah has stored something for her, cuz he is the most Beneficent and Merciful.

I was just listening to this being discussed on the radio talk show I listen to as I drove home a few minutes ago. It’s been on my mind since.
I think he deserves the acid… but I feel guilty and sick for saying so. He ruined her life.

What happened to Ameneh is terrible! In fact this happens to many women esp in the east.
Doing qisas in the same manner is a befitting punishment. But something more must be done to prevent future horrific cases like this.Punishment alone only serves as a deterent but it doesn’t drive home the message that women should be respected for simply who and what they are.
Men assume too much about women.Women should change that. And Ameneh has surely taken the right step forward.Bravo!

Oh no! No! NO! NNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOO!
The photo. My God!

This idiot guy is an electronic engineer. And the victim, Ameneh is an engineer too.
Some people debate that it’s cruel and is not just to do same to the attacker..
But Imagine next one is one of us, sisters, wives..
Actually before the attacker just would pay some money and stay in prison for 2 years. That was all. And it didnt make the crime less than before. And the money did not treat the victims..
Criminals got the idea that they easily can ruin life of that girl and then pay some money and be released. So the number of acid attacks become more and more..
I am so sick of these acid attackers.. If they be burnt as equal, maybe world will be a better place for living..
They’re jerk, rubbish, bastard..

Oh, wow! I read through the post and comments before looking at the picture. Now I am stunned. Truly a picture is worth a thousand words. Why such cruelty to one you loved? What?! Please, no one love me like that! :-S
I am glad that no longer are men getting away with abusing women like this. How awful!!!

He deserves the punishment.

You know, this is a prime example that Iranian laws while may appear harsh is equally applicable to both men and women. Often in the west they pick on punishments to women and then point and say “look! how Islam punishes women!”

It’s a shame they can’t just take his eyes and use them to help someone else – a corneal transplant or whatever else can be done these days. Ideally, to give her her eyesight back, but I don’t think that’s even a remote possibility either medically or just due to the fact that she has other facial issues besides just loss of her eyes.

Freshmen class “Student Leadership”
Our class voted as to whether or not the punishment is just:
12 out of 18 voted yes
2 voted no
1 was sleeping
1 person is undecided
On the question of whether or not this type of punishment will deter similar crimes in the future:
9 voted yes
9 were undecided or too lazy to form an opinion

I am so so so so happy to see so many Islam abiding Iranians here. You see, I’ve met several Iranians in my life, and especialy in Tehran, Muslims there don’t seem to care anymore. We should stick together and unite the ummah
Ya mu’izzu a izza ummathana
If we all unite, we can kick attacks like these out.

Although it seems hideous to do the same to this man, he deserves this at the very least. He should also be made to pay for Ameneh’s medical care and more. Any group who believes one human is worth less than another might as well be living in ancient times. If he is truly an engineer, and therefore educated, how much more heinous his crime is. Perhaps his sentence will truly deter more such vile attacks!

An eye for an eye is ideally suited for crimes of absolute cruelty. Does anybody have her contact info? I would be interested in sending her money.
February 19, 2009 at 7:34 pm
I think he should be punished. I do like the idea that his eyes should be removed and used for corneal transplant. Perhaps Miss Bahrami cannot or simply would not accept the transplant, however another female victim, blinded by acid, might be a favourable recipient. Where can money be sent for Miss Bahrami’s medical bill assistance ? God Bless her always and may she find forgiveness in her heart………so that she may continue to grow spiritually…..she is most beautiful and always shall be most precious for her courage .
February 19, 2009 at 10:16 pm
My heart goes out to you. I believe he should be punished for this crime and like she said eye for an eye. You are in my thoughts and prayers. This was terrible what a coward he is to hurt and damage such a beautiful woman.
February 20, 2009 at 8:25 am
I am very sorry about what happened to this young woman, and while I don’t agree with the “eye for an eye” theory, I can understand why she feels this way.
I pray that God will heal this young lady and that she will find peace. I can’t possibly imagine the pain that this young woman and her family has gone through. May God have mercy on the soul of her attacker. I don’t want to see anyone go through anything like this again.

URGENT:
It sounds weird, but instead of blinding him by acid, REMOVE HIS EYES. Use His Eyes for some blind person in this world. Its a working organ. Let someone else see light. They need not know who they got it from and neither should he know where it went in this world. I know there are millions of people who could use some sight. PLEASE!
I understand your anguish and being a woman, the anger coz of his atrocity swells in me. He deserves punishment. As for the agony that was caused on you, well, he can pay by giving away his face bit by bit to some random accident victim.
February 21, 2009 at 3:52 pm
very sad to see
how that beast did this act – huh!
January 14, 2010 at 8:10 am
The punishment is wrong.
An ‘Eye for an Eye’ leaves the whole world blind…
Literally, ethically and spiritually.
May 15, 2011 at 3:10 am
To those saying the criminals eyes should be transplanted to someone else: the technology to do this does not yet exist.
May 26, 2011 at 9:04 am
she should not stoop as low as this animal who inflicted such life devestating injurys. she should hold her head high and be proud that she is a better person than he will ever .then just wait for our god her god my god same god to resore paradise to earth and her beauty. god be with you allways.
